The built environment, also known as infrastructure, refers to the structures that support a society, such as roads, water supply and distribution lines, electrical grids, etc., that must be in place to allow for the exchange of goods and services essential to societal living. A sustainable infrastructure is one where environmental impacts are lessened through the implementation of:
- public transportation networks
- high efficiency buildings with energy-efficient landscaping
- connected green spaces and wildlife corridors
- low-impact development practices to protect water resources
