AN INTERVIEW FOR THE BLOG AND WICHITA ENTERTAINMENT FRIDAY NIGHT.  A BLOG FIRST!  A few months ago I got an email out of the blue from Bella Ruse, a Minneapolis band!!! I was surprised to learn that they were coming to town and wanted to talk about how important it is for them to be carbon neutral - to reduce their impact on the environment as much as possible.  The message said "GREEN" band Bella Ruse would be coming to play in Wichita on June 10th at the Bay Leaf Restaurant. Never heard of such a thing...a green band.

Bella Ruse, an amazing duo (Kay, vocalist, and Joseph, guitar) drive a “Veggie Van”. This is the name for a diesel van that they converted to also burn vegetable oil as a fuel. HOW COOL IS THAT?? These charming and talented musicians save loads of money and reduce their vehicle's air pollution and carbon emissions.  They are helping to save the planet and sustainably touring the country - virtually free.

I interviewed Bella Ruse, conversed through some emails and have listed to their music from the Bella Ruse website and youtube links. I recommend you check this group out if you are in town Friday, June 10th, at the Bayleaf @ 9:00 pm. Suite 110 at Clifton Square, 3700 East Douglas #110.

Van Details: The van runs on both diesel and vegetable oil. However, diesel is first needed to heat the veggie oil to the proper temperature.  After that, it mostly burns the veggie oil.  Bella Ruse say they go from town to town asking restaurants for their vegetable oil. They prefer Chinese or vegetarian restaurants as their oils are generally a cleaner fuel.

Joseph converted the van last year and, although they have had a few costly repairs, they are on track to pay for the truck within the 2011 year. They have a few pictures of the conversion work on the webiste that gives you an idea of the work effort.  These two music makers are an inspiration for other musicians and artists. Their actions are speaking loud and clear for what they care about.

Go out and join this upbeat duo for some great music (beside guitar, there is a kazoo). Be sure to ask about the veggie van. Wish I could go but have a family reunion to attend. If you go, snap some photos and I'll put them up.  I will be rattling some cages of my reporter friends – I hope they get some media coverage while they are in town on Friday.
