Earth Day - April 22Over 5000 elementary age children, parents and teachers braved the rainy weather for 2010 Celebrate Earth Day Kansas! at the Sedgwick County Zoo. This free environmental fair gives everyone the opportunity to learn how to protect and care for the world we live in. Local businesses, organizations and agencies provide hands-on activities and interactive exhibits; resulting in many environmental learning opportunities for children.

Incredible Journey
The City of Wichita WATER Center educators provided an interactive activity called “Incredible Journey,” in a classroom setting in the Cargill Learning Center. Students learned that the water on our planet is continually recycled and journeys through lakes, rivers, glaciers, aquifers, plants, animals, soil, clouds, and the oceans.

Rolling On the River
The River City Water Restoration and Protection Strategy group which is sponsored by the City gave children a virtual Arkansas River trip. "Rolling on the River" featured “Trash Man" and "Filter Girl” who educated our youth on best management practices to prevent river water pollution. As kids entered the booth, they received a stamp on their hand for every river BMP “site.”

Flower Planting in Biosolids
The Water Utility once again gave away flowers planted in biosolids to children. Biosolids are nutrient-rich organic materials resulting from the treatment of domestic sewage in the City’s wastewater treatment facility. When treated and processed, these residuals can be recycled and applied as fertilizer to improve and maintain productive soils and stimulate plant growth.
